"NCTU EECS Undergraduate Honors Program" (EECSHP) is a pioneer in undergraduate interdisciplinary education in Taiwan. This program creates a flexible and creative study environment in the electrical engineering and computer science area and it is an important step NCTU strives to enhance its higher education quality. There are totally over 230 faculty members in the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the College of Computer Science. All the professors support the teaching and research activities in the Honors Program, as well as similar activities in the Electronics, Communication Engineering, Electrical and Control Engineering, Computer Science, and Photonics Departments. The goal of Honors Program is to educate future leaders in both academic and industrial arenas, by equipping students not only with a solid background in the general electrical engineering and computer science curriculum but also with a global worldview through sending students abroad for at least one semester during their senior year through the exchanging student programs with NCTU partner schools in all over the world. We hope the students in the Honors Program will be able to fully develop their individual talents and in the future they will become leaders in various academic societies and in the industry.
Accelerated Advanced Studies
The Department encourages students to challenge themselves to complete their degrees faster than the normal requirement. Under these programs, students may receive both their bachelor・s and maste・s degrees within five years and their doctorates in seven years.
Global Worldview
In addition to the regular classes, the Department also arranges exchange programs with top-notch education and research institutes and distinguished lectures offered by world-renowned scholars. All these are a part of the holistic training offered to our students as the preparation for their careers as global IT professionals.
Excellent Career Prospects
By creating three professional programs with distinct emphases on Networking, Multi-media and Information Engineering, the Department aims at providing our students with technical knowledge and professional skills that match the demands of Taiwanese IT industry. The Department is conveniently located on the NCTU Hsinchu Campus adjacent to the famous Hsinchu Science Park, which holds more than 50% market share of the global IC foundry during the past decade. Throughout its history, the CSIE Department has maintained close ties with industrial vendors: many founders of prominent Taiwanese IT companies were the alumni of the Department, and the graduates from the Department have always been highly sought after by both local and international firms. In recent years, most of our graduates have found their careers in the industries of personal computers/PDAs, mobile phones, computer games, communication networks, IC design and digital content. A significant portion of them also chose to pursue doctoral studies immediately or in later stages of their careers.
Distinguished Research Achievements
As a research-oriented institution, the Department (with more than 70 faculty members) has the largest doctoral-degree-holding faculty body among the computer science departments in Taiwan. Moreover, our graduate (MS and PhD) students account for over 50% of the total enrollment.
The Department is also proud of its exceptional research achievements, including: ranking number two worldwide in the amount of software engineering research publication and number one among domestic computer science departments in terms of SCI paper count per faculty member. The Department also won the highest number of awards in the field of Computer and Information Sciences. Many faculty members are holding eminent positions (senior members or fellows) in international academic and professional societies including AAAS, ACM, IEE and IEEE, establishing academia-industry collaboration with prominent technology vendors such as Cisco, Intel, Microsoft and Xilinx as well as running company sponsored on-campus research centers.
Fully-equipped Teaching Laboratories
The Department satisfies equipment needs for teaching and research with abundant supply of top-end hardware and software including numerous desktop/notebook computers, digital cameras, scanners and laser printers updated every 3-4 years. Experiments offered by various courses are conducted in specialized teaching laboratories including two Multimedia Teaching Labs, two Microprocessor Teaching Labs, Information/Network Security Teaching Lab, Digital System Teaching Lab and Computer Graphics Teaching Lab.
Senior year projects are often performed in corporate-sponsored research centers such as those sponsored by Cisco, EMC, Intel, Microsoft and Xilinx. Daily computing services are providing and maintaining by an elaborate computing center opened 7x24 year round. All research and teaching laboratories are connected to the Internet through gigabit Ethernet. In addition, the entire department building is covered by multiple Wireless LANs
